| See The Dead is a short film by talented writer/director Robert Filion. The film follows Sarah who awakens to a dead world. As she struggles with her emotional traumas, she must survive the advance of nightmarish ghouls. A seemingly simple plot that isn't what it seems. This film takes the viewer on a good ride with a great twist. Sarah is played by Vanelle, who dose a good job not only carrying the story but also crating a person the viewer cares about in a short amount of time. The other stars of this film would have to be the ghouls. A convincing band of slow moving undead. The story is very strong and kept me trying to figure out what was going on all the way to the shocking end. The close camera angels on Sarah create an alone and almost claustrophobic feeling. When she is outside the color palette is unsettling and harsh, which is very effective. Adding to the tension is the sound of the undead’s raspy, death rattle breathing. The music is very haunting and really gives the film a melancholy and hopeless feel. Adding to this feeling are the cryptic voice-overs of Sarah's thoughts. The look of the film is surreal and beautiful. I love the blending of beauty and horror and it is done well here. Also well done is the classic undead stopper, a bullet to the head. What makes this movie stick with you is the ending. I will not spoil it but I can say it is disturbing and thought provoking. No wonder it won best short at the Atlanta Horror Film Festival in 2008 and the American Zombie Competition in Charlotte, NC in February 2009. Reviewed by: Jack |
